![]() ![]() Scotch Verdict: Miss Pirie and Miss Woods v. ![]() Her fascinating portrait documents the social, economic, and sexual pressures shaping the lives of nineteenth-century women and the issues of class and gender contributing to their marginalization. Reconstructing the libel suit filed by Pirie and Woods―which resulted in a scotch verdict, or a verdict of inconclusive/not proven―Faderman builds a compelling narrative from court transcripts, judges' notes, witnesses' contradictory testimony, and the prejudices of the men presiding over the case. Within days, the institution was deserted and the two women were deprived of their livelihoods.Īward-winning author Lillian Faderman recreates the events surrounding this notorious case, which became the basis for Lillian Hellman's famous play, The Children's Hour. Dame Helen Cumming Gordon, the wealthy and powerful grandmother of the accusing student, advised her friends to remove their daughters from the Drumsheugh boarding school. In 1810, a Scottish student named Jane Cumming accused her school mistresses, Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods, of having an affair in the presence of their students. ![]() (In 1810, a Scottish student named Jane Cumming accused he.) ![]() ![]() Fantastic, I am already tempted to listen to it again. I always make a point of listening to the Harry Dresdan books on audio because James Marsters does such a wonderful job with the narration and this book was no exception. ![]() Action packed and full of Harry's wonderful friends with the new addition of Butters, the polka loving waif of a coroner that grows a back bone while hanging out with our hero. The war is still raging against the red court vampires and a terrible new threat has come to Chicago threatening to kill thousands. He is adjusting to life with a crippled hand and is struggling to over come fears he is not even aware that he has. Harry is learning to adapt to having and living with his brother, Thomas. The book is unpredictable and ties together loose ends from previous books. Zombies, necromancers, animated dinosaurs, old and new enemies grace the pages of this book as Harry struggles to keep his friend Karrin Murphy's reputation safe. Absolutely brilliant book, the best in the series so far! Harry Dresdan is funnier than ever and becomes even more of a bad ass. ![]() ![]() In 1992, Virginia was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, which is presented every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People, in recognition of her entire body of work.
